Pac-12 rankings: Utes land Chandler guard, conference takes shape as recruits dwindle

  • Jun 2, 2018 Updated Apr 7, 2021

Here's a look at updated basketball class rankings in the Pac-12, as the Wildcats round out their roster, the rival Sun Devils bring another Serbian center to the state of Arizona, and the Utah Utes sign a combo guard from Chandler.

Sean Miller comes out of spring with 5 new Wildcats

Arizona's Sean Miller took questions and previewed his new recruiting class at a press conference May 31.

Sean Miller said this week he isn't sure if the Wildcats will fill their final remaining roster spot for the 2018-19 squad, but that it'd likely be a transfer if they do. That means Justin Coleman, Devonaire Doutrive, Ryan Luther, Omar Thielemans and Brandon Williams will make up the UA's class of 2018.

Miller said he considers Duke transfer Chase Jeter, who sat out last season due to NCAA rules, part of the incoming class as well.

"You can make the case that he might be as important as anybody on this upcoming team," Miller said.

Also of note around the conference: Utah, which owns the No. 34 class nationally, picked up coveted combo guard from Compass Prep in Chandler on Friday. Gach held offers from Texas Tech and San Diego State, among others, and earlier drew interest from Oregon.

Gach played his senior season in Chandler after transferring from a school in Minnesota. He averaged 21 points per game at Compass Prep. He's the second Arizona high school prospect to head to Salt Lake City, after the Utes in September inked four star Timmy Allen of Red Mountain High in Mesa.

Arizona on May 31 put junior Jake DesJardins on scholarship, leaving one remaining for any new high school recruits or transfers. DesJardins, aÌý6-6 wing, has made 10 appearances in two seasons for the Wildcats after walking on in 2016.

There's another Serbian center coming to Arizona, this time to UA rival Arizona State. The Sun Devils landed a commitment from 7-foot-1 Uros Plavsic on April 26, moving Bobby Hurley's 2018 class into the top 10 nationally and to third in the Pac-12.

Arizona had been rebuilding its class after taking a tumble when Los Angeles point guard backed out of his initial commitment in March.

Shareef O'Neal also decommitted Feb. 24 amid  Miller offered an incoming player money in 2016. O'Neal, a four-star power forward out of L.A. and the country's No. 45 overall recruit, committed to UCLA in February.

Miller has consistently reeled in top-ranked classes for the Wildcats. Arizona has ranked outside the top 10 nationally just twice (2010, No. 32; 2013, No. 11) in Miller's tenure, and has garnered at least four commitments all but once (2010).

With Williams, Doutrive, Thielemans, Luther and Coleman now en route to °µÍø³Ô¹Ï, here are updated Pac-12 rankings for 2018.
